Newspaper clippings - school, railway and Banagher Great Fair

This scrapbook comprises mostly of pasted in newspaper clippings on a diverse range of topics.
It includes, for example an account of visit to Banagher Boys National School of Rev Dr Monaghan, PP, Dean of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise.
There is a printed petition to Great Southern and Western Railways regarding proposed discontinuance of services from Banagher to Clara, and several published letters relating to promotion of Banagher Great Fair.
Includes also, letter dated 15th May 1906 on the importance of compulsory education and account of the funeral of the Rev. M. J. Moore S. J. in October 1936.

J. J. Hogan - unemployment relief schemes

Letter from J. J. Hogan, Chief Executive Officer, Offaly Vocational Education Committee regarding schemes for the relief of unemployment and in particular of the amount of unskilled labour required to build a school.

Purchases for classes

Five Bills of Sale for goods and provisions relating to technical classes (mainly cookery).

Class enrolments

Typed letter of 20th November 1926 of E. J. Delahunty, Secretary Offaly Joint Committee of Technical Education to R. H. Moore regarding enrolment for classes at Banagher. Letter notes that the small enrolment for Miss O'Mahoney's classes 'raise a very serious question regarding the continuance of the school as a Technical School'. With typed note of 13th December 1926 regarding payment of salaries and bonus by cheque.

Financial request for repairs

Typed letter of 26th January 1918 of [RH Moore Banagher] to Messer's F. A. Waller and Co. Banagher, requesting financial assistance for urgent repairs to Banagher Technical School.

Manuscript copy correspondence book of R. H. Moore, Hon Sec of Offaly County Committee of Technical Education. Banagher Sub-Committee. Includes also copy correspondence of 13th Oct 1929, with E. J. Delahunty, Secretary of Offaly Joint Committee of Education, regarding the appointment of teachers and supervision of classes.

Vocational and Technical Education

Moore was secretary of the King's County Committee of Education. This committee was set up to administer and encourage the provision of technical and vocational education in skills such as cookery, metal work and wood work. Technical classes were established by the provision of capitation grants. These classes would provide young people with vocational and trade skills necessary to gain employment. It was here that young people could be prepared to accredited technical examinations.
