Swayne, Peadar, Father

Fr Peadar Mac Suibhne was born as Peter Swayne in 1896, near Ballon, Co. Carlow. He was educated at Knockbeg College, Clonliffe College, University College Dublin and Carlow College (1916-1920), and was ordained in 1920 for the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin. Fr Mac Suibhne joined the staff of Knockbeg College (1920-1949), including a period as Rector (1927-1949). He then served as parish priest, Suncroft (1949-1951) and Kildare (1951- 1970), both Co. Kildare. He retired to Carlow College in 1970, where he worked on the College archives.

Fr Mac Suibhne was a keen historian and wrote or edited a number of books, including a five-volume work on the etters of Paul Cardinal Cullen, Archbishop of Dublin (1803-
1878); parish histories of Killeshin/Graiguecullen, Clonegal, Ballon and Rathangan; the 1798 Rebellion in Carlow and Kildare; St Brigid; and various works relating to Carlow College and Knockbeg College.

Thomas Stroud Hosford, son of Joseph Hosford, was born in 1845 in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin, Ireland. He married the widow Anne Brodie Butchart (1838-1929), daughter of James Ainslie (1812-1881), on 5 October 1871, at Saint Luke's Church in Westbourne Park, Westminster, England. They had three children; Florence Ainslie Hosford (b. 1874); Edith Josephine Ainslie Hosford (b. 1876); Douglas Ainslie Hosford (1879-1969). Thomas Stroud Hosford died on 22 April 1929, at his home at 37 Richmond Hill, Richmond, Surrey, England.

Eileen Muriel Smith, daughter of John Cairns Ebenezer Smith (b. 1858) and Jane Davison (1861-1934) was born 1 February 1886 in County Waterford, Ireland. She married Theodore Cronhelm Tobias (1876-1959) in Dublin on 18 October 1913. They had four children: James Matthew Howard Tobias (1914-2000); Helen Margaret Tobias (1917-2011); Eirene Davison Galway Tobias (1919-2015); and Barbara Elizabeth Tobias (1924-1996). Eileen Muriel Tobias died in Dublin on 10 August 1984.

James Tobias, eldest son of Reverend Matthew Tobias (1770-1845) and Jane Stirling (1770-1852), was born 11 July 1803 in Belfast. He married Mary Anne Rowe on 25 March 1834 at Saint Iberius Church, County Wexford. They had eight children.
Reverend James Tobias died 24 August 1882 at Mount Michael, Sandymount, Dublin, and was buried at Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin.
