The first is a letter from Herbert Kennan proposing that Benjamin and he only shake hands once and then 'drop this courtesy, which has existed too long without further explanation.' The second letter dated 7 December 1868 is from Henry Trench scolding Benjamin for borrowing money from D.A M'Cready and stating that he will no longer be allowed to use the account for personal expenses.
