Correspondence on Geashill Castle Claim (1922-1927)

Original incoming and copy outgoing letters relating a grant claim for Geashill Castle after its destruction. Includes a copy of the brief for counsel for the claim of £19,614.17 for Geashill Castles and its contents (1923); evaluation of three elk horns destroyed in the fire;
letter from Lord Digby to Goodbody Solicitors, Dorset "I must congratulate you once more for the very successful result of your hard work in relation to this claim, and I know what a difficult case it must have been for you to get a satisfactory settlement. I think you ought to know how very please I am over the way the case was conducted" (22 February 1926); letter from the Ministery of Finance details that "under the Malicious Injury Act you are entitle in this case to £1635 in clash, and £1100 in Bonds - total £2735" (19 February 1926).

Photographs and negatives taken of Loughton house and the surrounding estate. The majority of the photographs are of the exterior of the house and of horses kept in Loughton. The file includes one negative of the interior, photographs of Theodora Trench, Sheelah Lefroy and Langlois Massy Lefroy playing and walking dogs, work being carried out on the estate and a negative of Benjamin Bloomfield Trench on a horse. The file includes a Christmas card from Buffy [?] sent to Theodora containing a photograph taken in Loughton of Theodora and an unidentified young boy.
Also included in the file are six glass plate negatives which show the interior of Borrisnafarney Church, a hunt gathered outside Loughton House and two unknown ladies walking their dogs.

Application from P. J. Molloy for his parents

Ms letter to Banagher Local Pensions Allotment Board from P. J. Molloy regarding the grant paid to his mother. Letter states that both his parents are ill and unable to survive on the present grant of 9s 2d. With annotation from Major Rogers endorsing the application.

Notes on Srah Castle and the Briscoes

Draft letter from Fr. Hurley, St Francis Xavier Church, Gardiner St., Dublin, to Pádraig [?], comprising 'notes from mss Mt Briscoe 1785.' The letter composed in Irish, contains transcripts in English from an 18th century manuscript loaned to Hurley in 1948 from Mrs Briscoe following a lecture to the Kildare Archaeological Society. Hurley notes that the author of the manuscript was a good historian and evidently had a good knowledge of sources available to him at the time of writing. The manuscript concerns the history of the Briscoes, the marriage of John Briscoe to Eleanor Kearney and the construction of Srahkerne Castle (Srah Castle, Tullamore) in 1588.
