This file relates to the Atkinson family who took possession of Loughton and its estate in 1975 after the death of Sheelah Lefroy and Theodora Trench. Includes two certificates appointing Richard Frederick Atkinson to military positions in the infantry (1869) and as a Lieutenant in the Sixty-Seventh Regiment of Foot (1871). Also included in the file is a list of Major A.G Atkinson's deeds and papers, taken from Cangort, Shinrone, Co. Offaly and donated to the National Library. Examples include a 'copy of a translation of letters patent to Sir Edward Polton, solicitor-general, of Pallace and other townlands in Queens Co.; the manors of Prassil and Corduff in Co. Dublin; and the late Abbey of Bective in Co. Meath. 1639, Declaration of trust (French to Atkinson) about the purchase of lands in Co. Galway, 1702.

File of records resulting from Benjamin Bloomfield Trench's work with The Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company.

The file includes a copy of a report written by Benjamin Bloomfield Trench to the 'Chairman & directors, Johannesburg Consolidated Investment company'. Benjamin argues that reason for him writing the report was because 'prior to my departure for England I think its desirable I should report to you my views as to the working of the company's business and its administration and submit for your consideration a few suggestions in connection therewith.' Within the report Benjamin covers topics such as improving profits, future policy, the mining department and representation on the board.

The file also includes documents such as a balance sheet from 30 June 1895 and a letter from William Bailey accountant answering profit and loss enquiries.

The guest book contains a brief history of the house and of the Trench and Atkinson families possibly written by Theodora Trench and completed by Guy Atkinson after her death.
'Loughton was built in 1777. The library was the dinning room & the hall the dining room, the entrance was on the north side, where the present straircase is. Lord Bloomfield added the present drawing and dinning room & improved the place about 1835.
Loughton is said to have belonged to the Peppers from Cromwell's time till 1828, when Thomas Ryder Pepper was killed out hunting, aged about 50. He had neither brother nor child, he was married to Miss Bloomfield & left a request in his will, that his brother-in-law Lord Bloomfield should buy Loughton for a certain sum which he did. The 2nd Lord Bloomfield sold Loughton to his brother-in-law, Mr Trench of Cangort Park in 1870. W T. Trench lived at Loughton 1877 till 1889. B.B.T & D.T first went there in 1890, & bought it in 1893. DT died in 1898 and BBT in 1926. Thora Trench lived on here until joined by her sister Sheelah in 1961. Thora died in 1971 and Sheelah in 1973. Guy Atkinson inherited Loughton in 1970 and it was looked after his parents Anthony and Anne until he moved here in 1975.'
