Lady Emily Alfreda Julia Bury was the youngest daughter of the 3rd earl of Charleville. She became heir to the estates at Charleville Forest when her uncle Alfred Bury, 5th earl of Charleville died leaving no male heirs. The title became extinct at this point. She married Captain Kenneth Howard an army officer, in 1881, and he assumed the additional surname Bury by royal license after their marriage. She had two children, Marjorie who died at 22 years of age, and a son, Charles Kenneth Howard-Bury, the famous mountaineer and explorer.

Captain Kenneth Howard was the eldest son of James Kenneth Howard and was an army officer. He married Lady Emily Alfreda Julia Bury in 1881 and on their marriage he assumed the second surname and the arms of Bury by royal license. They had two children, Charles Kenneth Howard-Bury and Marjorie Howard-Bury. He died in 1885, while his children were very young. Lady Emily who had inherited the Charleville estate in 1875, lived until 1931.

Marjorie Howard-Bury was the only daughter of Lady Emily Howard-Bury and her husband Capt. Kenneth Howard-Bury. She died at 22 years of age and there is a memorial to her at St Catherine's Church, Tullamore.

Newspaper cutting from The King’s County Chronicle concerning the death of Miss Marjorie Howard-Bury following a brief illness, which sad event “brought profound grief over and far outside the [Charleville] estate”. Miss Bury was buried in the family vault under the chancel of St. Catherine’s, and it was remarked that “notwithstanding the very severe character of the weather the general procession was of remarkable dimensions”.
