James McKenna was clerk of Tullamore Poor Law Union for approximately 40 years. Born in County Monaghan, his early career was as a teacher in Mountmellick, County Laois. He was then appointed clerk of the Tullamore Union where he remained until his retirement. He died on 4 December 1907 at the age of 92 years. An obituary published in the King's County Chronicle remarked 'An idea of his self-sacrifice to his work will be formed when it is stated that even on Christmas days instead of passing holidays at home with his family, he would be seen in his office in Tullamore Workhouse as intent upon his duties as if he was bound to have his books posted up for an immediate imperative inspection.'
After the incorporation of the company in 1968 , five years were spend with product and consumer research. The products came out in 1973 including the flavours Coffee, Citron, Chocolate Mint and Cream Mint. In the following years the liqueurs Creme de Menthe, Chocolate and Advocat were added to the range.
The export market was the focus of the company.
The company was incorporated in 1962 and acted as the controlling company of the retailing division. In the 1970s there were around 30 Five Star Supermarkets opened, with off-licence sections offering the range of wines, spirits and mineral drinks manufactured by the Williams Group.
In the 1975 the company acquired 13 Allied Suppliers Stores trading under the Lipton name.
Quinnsworth acquired the chain in 1979. 2008 the company was dissolved.
